Teaching Science in Ontario

The primary objective of Ontario's secondary school science curriculum is for all students to achieve a high degree of scientific literacy. This goal was identified through the revision of the Ontario Curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 Science  in 2008, and serves to provide, at minimum, a foundation of basic scientific understanding to allow every student to thrive in the 21st century. To this end, the three underlying goals as stated in the curriculum, and therefore considered when instructors develop course content, are:

  1. to relate science to technology, society, and the environment
  2. to develop the skills, strategies, and habits of mind required for scientific inquiry
  3. to understand the basic concepts of science

Each grade 11 and 12 science course in Ontario has a unique set of expectations that relate the specific course content to these goals, considering six fundamental science concepts (matter; energy; systems and interactions; structure and function; sustainability and stewardship; and change and continuity). Thus, clear learning outcomes are clearly identified for each course, and are publicly available for review.

It is using these course-specific learning outcomes that I have based my science tutoring program. My program is further tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, to provide assistance and place emphasis where needed (and not spending extensive time where it is not needed) in order to set my students up for success!
